At UFC 247, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones puts his title up for grabs against undefeated contender Dominick Reyes. Anecdotally, there appears to be widespread skepticism about Reyes's chances. While I certainly believe Jones is the deserving favorite and is an incredibly complex puzzle for anyone - especially Reyes - to solve, there are reasons why taking this fight seriously and showing respect for Reyes's abilities are important. Superfights with Israel Adesanya and Stipe Miocic are incontestably bigger, but that doesn't mean looking past Saturday is an especially prudent call. This also doesn't mean I'm calling for Reyes to win. Generally, I find the future truly unknowable. But offering a degree of respect to the bout and both of its competitors is warranted.
