Health experts say face masks generally not needed for people who are well The Wuhan coronavirus has fuelled demand for masks around the world. However, some experts are skeptical about the effectiveness of masks against airborne viruses, but they said masks can help prevent hand-to-mouth transmission. In Singapore, the Health Ministry has posted an advisory saying masks are generally not needed for people who are well. Only those who are sick are advised to wear masks so they do not spread their illnesses others. Health experts said a good defence is to wash one's hands frequently with soap and water.
