Dry Ice Color Show

Dry Ice Color Show Adding a small piece of solid carbon dioxide to a colored indicator solution and watch as the solution immediately begins to “boil” and change color.

Concepts: Acids & Bases, Indicators, Phases of Matter, Sublimation

Materials:
Ammonia, household, 5 mL Indicator solutions
Beakers, 1-L, 5 Bromcresol green, 0.04% aqueous, 2 mL
Beakers, 100-mL, 5 Bromthymol blue, 0.04% aqueous, 2 mL
Dry ice nuggets, 5 (size of walnuts) Methyl red, 0.02% aqueous, 2 mL
Gloves, insulated type (for handling dry ice) Phenol red 0.02% aqueous, 2 mL
Water, distilled or deionized (tap water will also work) Universal indicator, 2 mL
Wood splint (optional)
