Demystifying the External Oblique Opener Progression. Start with BREATH

Demystifying the External Oblique Opener Progression. Start with BREATH There are a few fundamental human "skills" or "abilities" that individuals tend to LOSE as they "develop". The first is squatting. Thanks to the modern marvel known as the chair, the average person living in western society loses the motor control to squat. Look at any toddler, and they have NO problems getting into a PERFECT squat position and staying there comfortably. Many adults start to freak out after about 30 seconds or less.

Another skill that is "lost" is efficient breathing. Many people hold their breath when they workout or are faced with any other kind of stress. Sometimes they hyperventilate and up in a panic.

The external oblique opener is an "interesting" exercise that many struggle with. The root of the problem for many is that they hold their breath at the top of the exercise, the bottom, or both. Then they start to freak out because they're breathing erratically. When learning the oblique opener, it's important to focus first on the breath. Let it be slow and consistent. Nail the breathing first, then add the tension. Then it's always breathing, always moving. If you don't breathe, you die. Also, if you don't breathe, you'll be less connected to your body.

The entire point of the oblique opener is to create a CONNECTION between breath and body. So master the breath first, then the connections will happen.
