After a year of living in Japan I take trip to reconnect with my past

After a year of living in Japan I take trip to reconnect with my past Over the past year I have been living and working in Japan. I moved to Tokyo in the summer of 2018 and after experiencing some of the culture, natural wonders, cities and food, I decided to take a trip a little closer to home. I wanted to reconnect with my past and remember where I come from. This was a journey of discovering mine and my families past that brought a lot of happy and sad memories.

Prior to moving to Japan I lived in Uzbekistan, Ukraine and UK (as well as a few other places). I wanted to see my old house in Kiev Ukraine and remember what my life used to be like. Away from the busy and lit up street of Khreschatik is normal every day real Ukranian life that definitely lacks the comforts of a modern city such as Tokyo.

I get a lot of questions asking me, where are you from? This has always been difficult for me to answer. Aside from living in Japan I have lived in a LOT of places. I have been a foreigner many times. My ethnicity is split and my background is mixed. I was born in Uzbekistan to a family of nomads. My grandmother is from a tiny village in Belarus. My grandfather was from one of the worlds oldest cities, Samarkand. The rest are spread out across across Central Asia, Russia and Ukraine.

Prior to moving to the UK or Japan, at first I moved from Uzbekistan to Ukraine with my grandmother. And even though most immediate family have moved elsewhere, some of my family still live there, reluctant to leave because of centuries long loyalty to their country. Eventually I will take a tip to Uzbekistan, I can imagine that being an especially difficult journey for me but if everything goes to plan, this will happen next year.

If you have read this far, I really hope you enjoy the video! It has been really difficulty to make, both in terms of editing and emotionally. I don’t normally feel emotional when I watched videos but this one has brought back all kinds of feelings.
