Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe Security forces appeared to have deterred a large number of demonstrators from turning up at an unsanctioned opposition march in Bulawayo on Monday.
Riot police armed with batons and shields patrolled the largely empty streets. Checkpoints and roadblocks were also set up on roads leading to the city centre.
The government banned the protest on Sunday and magistrates upheld the ban after the demonstration was due to end on on Monday.
The march was called by the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), Zimbabwe's main opposition party, as it begins a protest campaign against President Emmerson Mnangawa's Zanu-PF government. The MDC are calling for a transitional government amid an economic crisis and rising political violence.
A similar march in Harare was brought to a violent end by security forces on Friday.
