Police say HKong now largely normal after protests

Police say HKong now largely normal after protests (6 Aug 2019) Hong Kong police say the city has largely returned to normal following a day and night of chaos in which protesters paralysed traffic and assaulted 21 police stations and other facilities with bricks, gasoline bombs and other weapons.

Chief Superintendent and Head of the Police Public Relations Bureau, John Tse, said during a Tuesday press conference that police "are capable and determined in controlling the situation and restoring public order."

Tse also called on the citizens of Hong Kong not to tolerate any acts of violence.

He condemned what he called "radical protesters" who hijack public gatherings and exploit them to commit violent acts like assaulting police, attacking police stations and facilities.

Weeks of protests have demanded the dissolution of the legislature, an investigation into police use of force against protesters and full democracy for the semi-autonomous Chinese territory.
