Supporters of the Kashmiri’s autonomy will gather in London on Thursday, August 15. Different groups are demonstrating against the decision by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strip Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir of its special status by revoking Article 370 of India’s constitution. The demonstration coincides with India’s Independence Day.

More than 560 Kashmiri politicians and separatists have reportedly been detained in one of the most severe crackdowns carried out by the Indian authorities in years. The deployment of more than 40,000 soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir since the beginning of the week has not prevented protests in which, according to local media, at least one demonstrator has died.

The revoked article 370 guaranteed special rights to Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, including the right to its own constitution and significant autonomy, such as the ability to make laws giving preferential treatment to its own residents. The Indian government has sent thousands of additional troops to the disputed region, imposed a curfew, shut down telecommunications, and arrested political leaders.
