Why Jakarta Is Sinking, And What’s Being Done To Stop It According to the World Economic Forum, Jakarta is one of the world’s fastest disappearing cities. Jakarta has come up with a US$222 million project called National Capital Integrated Coastal Development, which includes the construction of coastal dykes and a giant seawall to protect the city from rising sea levels.

Apart from climate change, incidents of flooding persist due to land subsidence in northern Jakarta. This can be attributed to excessive extraction of groundwater from aquifers, by those who do not have access to piped water.
