The Pearl River, which flooded areas across central Mississippi including the metro of Jackson last week, crested today at 25.6 feet. This resulted in many homes, businesses, and roadways becoming flooded. This marks the worst flood to have impacted the area since 1983. Dozens of roads remain closed.

On the west side of town, floodwaters intersected with tornado damage from the December 16th EF-2. Some locations that received significant damage from the tornado now find themselves in flood water just 2 months later. A twisted billboard, scattered debris in flood water, roof damage, as well as damaged trees is evident near the highway 98 Pearl River crossing.

Across the US 98 bridge, the town of Foxworth has significant flooding near the river and to the north along highway 587, Morgantown has all but one route in and out of town shut down by floodwater. Numerous homes here are significantly flooded. Along 587 north of town, an area known as the "Grand Canyon Of Mississippi" or "Red Bluff" has become a popular destination for hikers and explorers. The result of continued erosion along a large steep slow below highway 587, the canyon spans over a 1/2 mile wide, 150 feet deep, and some mile long. Record rains and flooding in the area have caused the large washed out area to increase in size with sections of a now-closed roadway continuing to be destroyed.
