Tourists visiting St. Mark's square on Tuesday enjoyed much free space on an unusually quiet plaza while restaurants, hotels and souvenir stores counted their losses.

Below their Venetian masks they also wore white sanitary masks.

The city had barely recovered from record tides which had damaged it physically but also economically, scaring tourists away, before coronavirus fears started hurting business.

Authorities on Wednesday cancelled the last two days of Venice's iconic Carnival festivities and ordered theatres, museums and churches close their doors to prevent the spread of the virus after Italy became the country with the most cases outside of Asia.
