The history of St Valentine’s Day–and the story of its patron saint–is covered in mystery. Who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with showing love?
When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he made marriage for young men illegal. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.
When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. So Valentine was beheaded for a story of war - is it really worth celebrating that?
Just show your love every day and forget war stories from 1,800 years ago :-)
