Random Chord Progression Practice | Can You Play What You Thought About? (2020)

Random Chord Progression Practice | Can You Play What You Thought About? (2020) When learning repertoire, once it's on your internal jukebox, you need to get the chords down. This is best done away from the piano to reduce conscious interference at the piano and confirm to yourself that you really know the progression.

The exercise herein encourages you to follow the steps below while away from the piano, before going to it and feeling the chords and playing them however your hands so desire. The benefits are significant in repertoire mastery, major scale mastery and internal piano mastery!

1. Choose how many chords your progression will include (e.g. 3);
2. Select, at random, numbers diatonic or non-diatonic to the major scale (no master key selected yet) and master the sequence (e.g. 4, 2, 7);
3. Choose a master key (e.g. F);
4. Apply the results to your internal piano (e.g. Bb, G, E) and master;
5. Choose chord types depending on your level or preference (e.g. only major triads) and master them on your internal piano;
6. Go to the piano and have fun with the results!
