Strengthening the College Experience - Sandy Baum, Michael McPherson Sandy Baum and Michael McPherson, guest editors of the Fall 2019 issue of Daedalus on Improving Teaching, discuss what goes on inside the ‘black box’ of teaching and learning that college students actually experience.

Following an introduction from Academy President David Oxtoby, Michael McPherson (4:23) gives an introduction to the work and findings of the Commission on the Future of Undergraduate addresses the quality of teaching in undergraduate education and how it must rise to meet our nation's needs. Sandy Baum (11:32) adds her perspective, focusing on the general problem of teaching and learning in American higher education.

"Improving Teaching: Strengthening the College Learning Experience" was held on October 30, 2019 at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in Cambridge, MA. The event, which served as the 2085th Stated Meeting, was the 2019 Distinguished Morton L. Mandel Annual Public Lecture.

Sandy Baum is a Nonresident Fellow in the Center on Education Data and Policy at the Urban Institute and Professor Emerita of Economics at Skidmore College. An expert on higher education finance, she speaks and writes extensively about issues relating to college access, college pricing, student aid policy, student debt, and affordability. Since 2002, Dr. Baum has coauthored the College Board’s annual publications Trends in Student Aid and Trends in College Pricing. She is a member of the Academy's Commission on the Future of Undergraduate Education.

Michael McPherson is President Emeritus of the Spencer Foundation and a Nonresident Fellow in the Center on Education Data and Policy at the Urban Institute. Prior to joining the Spencer Foundation in 2003, he served as President of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, for seven years. A nationally known economist whose expertise focuses on the interplay between education and economics, Dr. McPherson spent the twenty-two years prior to his Macalester presidency as Professor of Economics, Chairman of the Economics Department, and Dean of Faculty at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014 and is the Cochair of the Academy’s Commission on the Future of Undergraduate Education.

David W. Oxtoby is the President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is President Emeritus of Pomona College and he was a Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education prior to becoming President of the American Academy.
