Macrophages are cells that belong to what we call the innate immune system. Traditionally our laboratory has focused on macrophage activity against pathogens. Now we have recently realized that responses against pathogens, which occur in the short term but also in the long term, can be replicated in responses against other microorganisms. And our question right now is, what is the difference between a macrophage that responds to a pathogen, and a macrophage that responds to a microorganism that is not harmful to us.
