About this video:
New Year, new you goals are seductive. But we often take on too much and set goals to make drastic changes that we can't sustain.
As an example, let's take the goal of cutting out sugar. We focus on the desired outcome of a sugar-free diet, rather than the process; those incremental steps we must do each day to reduce sugar in our diet.
We're not thinking about our relationship to sugar, the events in the day that trigger cravings, stocking pantry with healthy snacks or meal prepping nourishing food to stabilize blood sugar.
So we white knuckle our way through denying ourselves sweet treats. We rely on willpower and self-discipline, which we only have a finite amount of each day.
Setting goals is not enough to change behavior or form new habits. For sustainable change, we must also connect with our purpose/our why/the emotions we're after. Here's how to do it:
Values vs Goals
The best way to connect to your why is by identifying your health values.
Values - intention for how you want to show up for yourself; direction want to be heading - never-ending
Goal - want to achieve an outcome; once met, it can be crossed off the list.
I believe values are more important than goals bc they're the key that unlocks natural drive, motivation and determination
This week, try to identify one of your health values. (I've mentioned a few: mindful, intentional, self-respect, self-aware. You can also google "core values" for ideas.)
Having this value in mind will help you be more strategic when setting goals and happier and more fulfilled working towards them
I've created a printable worksheet to help you reflect on this past year and identify your values moving into the new year with more ease.
But remember, the new year is an arbitrary date. You can use this video and the guide anytime you want to reconnect with your health values.
