The man is thrown backwards several feet, crashing back down onto the rocks on his back, before falling several meters down into the turbulent Monterey Bay waters.

Thankfully, the man was rescued by Cal Fire and California State Parks rangers, escaping the frightening ordeal with only minor injuries.

Lasting less than 10 seconds, officials say the man's encounter with death should serve as a reminder to others of how quickly danger can occur when it comes to the ocean.

The fearsome wave came as part of a Pacific Ocean storm which had formed in the Aleutian Islands and sent a giant swell to Monterey Bay.

As a result, the National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement, with waves as tall as two-story buildings expected to rattle the coast through Thursday.

West and northwest-facing beaches from northern Sonoma County through Monterey County will be hit hardest, with breakers in excess of 25 feet possible at many beaches including San Francisco's Ocean Beach.

Officials are advising beach goers to be safe near the #water and to not turn their backs on the ocean.
