Singapore breeds millions of bacteria-infected mosquitoes to fight deadly dengue fever

Singapore unveiled a new mosquito breeding facility on December 4, 2019, as part of its programme to fight dengue fever. Male insects infected with the Wolbachia bacteria in labs of the city state’s National Environment Agency do not bite, and when released into the wild to breed with females, their eggs do not hatch. The number of cases of the deadly illness has been dropping fast in communities in Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil and Australia where similar breeding programmes involving special mosquitoes are underway.
