Story: France's Parliament on Tuesday passed a resolution declaring the country views anti-Zionism a form of antisemitism.
France's National Assembly adopted the motion 154 in favor and 72 opposed, which includes language outlined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism.
“For some years now, France, the whole of Europe, but also almost all Western democracies are facing a rise in antisemitism,” the resolution states.
“Anti-Zionist acts can at times hide antisemitic realities. Hate toward Israel due to its perception as a Jewish collective is akin to hatred towards the entire Jewish community.”


The motion was originally proposed by parliamentarian Sylvain Maillard of La République En Marche, President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party.
The IHRA states that antisemitic examples of hatred towards Israel include claiming that Israel is a racist endeavor, comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, and accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel than to the interests of their own nations.
Critics of the proposal complained that the resolution will stifle freedom of expression for supporters of Palestinians and critics of Israel, adding that conflating Zionism and Judaism is dangerous and in itself a form of antisemitism.
