"There are two kinds of blacksmiths, those who wait for the iron to get hot before striking, and those who make the iron hot by striking" First of is a demonstration of how long you can work in a single heat by alternating between hitting two adjacent sides. I'm far out of practice doing this, and I'll practice and try again in a few months. For now I managed to draw out a 5 cm taper, of 16mm square, going from 15 cm to 20 cm in one heat.
After that I went straight into working a bit of 6mm square up to temperature with the hammer, using the same technique. At this point I was pretty knackered and started fumbling a bit. I did get the slightest amount of glow to the tip, but I'll get back to this too in a few months and try again. Hopefully being able to actually light a fire next time around.
