You can often get very lucky with the right planning and getting a decent apartment the first time around (I got very lucky).
Apartments in China are vast and diverse. You can go cheap, medium, and super pricey. The price you pay per month for rent depends on a few factors:
Location, location, and location! (Among a few others)
Your location within China will be a big factor in the monthly rent you pay for your apartment. Apartments in Beijing will cost more than apartments in Changsha, China. Sometimes you can get lucky or plan for apartments on the outskirts of major cities and pay less than a major downtown area.
Tips for apartment hunting and prices:
- Negotiate your rent prices with your employer, business, or organization
- Teaching Universities offer FREE apartments
- Ask for pictures(even video) of the apartment building, apartment, kitchen,
and bathroom facilities.

Upon arrival, a visual inspection for cracks in the wall, cracks in the foundation, and dilipated buildings should be approached with caution and observed by you. It maybe beneficial to rent a backup hotel in case you are not satisfied with conditions of your apartment. The backup hotel will help you settle in to your place of work or leisure until you find more long-term housing.
