Black Friday shoppers, protesters take Chicago

Black Friday shoppers, protesters take Chicago (29 Nov 2019) Black Friday shoppers in Chicago woke up early to get deals on holiday shopping at the Water Tower Place shopping center downtown.

Some shoppers were surprised at the relatively light crowds, which pointed to the ever-growing popularity of online shopping.

This year, many people also got a head start on gift hunting, lured by early holiday deals from retailers trying to compensate for the shorter season.

The shopping season is the shortest since 2013 because Thanksgiving fell on the last Thursday in November — the latest possible date it could be.

A group of young climate demonstrators marched along Michigan Avenue amid the crowds of shoppers as part of a global action on climate justice. They gathered at a nearby park as they tried to recruit shoppers to march with them again on December 4.
