Col. Carla Riner assumed command of the Delaware Air National Guard’s 166th Airlift Wing during a ceremony at its base in New Castle Saturday, April 6th at 10 a.m.

Riner, who is coming from the West Virginia National Guard, arrived early last month to take over the position duties.

Riner’s responsibilities as Wing Commander include overseeing the base property and capital assets and controlling an annual budget exceeding $50 million. The wing’s overall mission is to provide tactical airlift and air drop of troops, cargo and passengers using C-130H2 aircraft, and to provide aeromedical evacuation, civil engineer and offensive cyberspace operations.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Col. Riner started her Air Force career as a pilot select at the 167th Airlift Wing in Martinsburg, West Virginia in 1993. After Undergraduate Pilot Training at Vance AFB in 1997, she served as a C-130 pilot in tactical airlift operations throughout the world, including flying in various contingencies including Operations Joint Forge, Coronet Oak, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. She also served as the Officer in Charge of the Presidential move from the National Capital Region to Dallas, Texas for President George W. Bush’s administrative effects.
