SUMMARY: Based upon and inspired by the author’s article “Bach’s Goldberg Variations Demystified” published in American Music Teacher, this comprehensive guide to Bach’s great variation cycle is written specifically for piano teachers and students as well as concert artists. The edition begins with two critical essays on the variations addressed to two audiences: 1) intermediate-level piano students and their teachers as well as hobby pianists who desire to learn selected variations; 2) professional concert performers who desire to perform the complete cycle. The first essay includes practical pedagogical insights, which includes a list of the variations in order of difficulty. The second essay, more technical and analytical in nature, includes a detailed overview of the tempi and tempo relationships (i.e., large-scale temporal organization) Bach intended based on historical evidence, which helps performers understand Bach’s intentions for the cycle in a complete performance. Bach intended the Goldberg Variations as a compendium of his stylistic genres to be practiced by keyboardists of all levels, including less advanced and intermediate-level students, and not necessarily to be played in one complete performance. However, Bach also intended the Goldberg Variations as a difficult tour de force to be performed in entirety by gifted artists who are able. Hence, this beautifully engraved and easy-to-read comprehensive Urtext edition, supplied with critical essays, fingerings, and historically informed metronome speeds, makes Bach’s great masterwork accessible to amateurs and professionals alike.
