We know that waitlists for services can sometimes be long. We also know that the wait can be very stressful for families. Here are a few things you may be able to do in the meantime.
• Talk to your doctor. He or she will want to know changes you’ve observed in your child and could possibly be able to offer guidance while you wait.
• Tap into any resources available at your child’s school. Some schools may have counselors on staff to provide additional support. Even if mental health services are not available, it is helpful for school personnel to be aware of any ongoing concerns so that they can offer assistance as needed throughout the child’s day.
• Follow up with the intake department and ask to be placed on a waitlist if there are any cancellations. Additionally, you will want to let them know if the situation worsens so they can document the urgency of the appointment as appropriate.
• Educate yourself as much as possible. Remember, be an advocate. The more you learn about coping skills, the better you can model them to your child and coach them in their own practice.
• Know what resources are available in your community. Whether these include support groups or available crisis services in your area, do some research to see what’s out there. More is better as far as resources go!
